Pills will be ordered from pharmaceutical company Pfizer to treat up to 20 million patients, President Joe Biden said Tuesday (Jan. 4) at the White House. “We may even need more,” Biden said, looking ahead to the coming months. The drug will prevent many hospitalizations and deaths, he added. Pfizer, along with German company Biontech, already markets a widely used vaccine against the corona virus.
The number of new corona infections recorded daily in the U.S. has exceeded one million for the first time since the pandemic began. With about 1.084 million new cases on Monday, authorities recorded almost twice as many infections as exactly one week ago (544,329), according to data released Tuesday (Dec. 4) by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore. The number of deaths with confirmed corona infection remained comparatively stable at 1693 victims within 24 hours. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that as of the end of December, more than 58 percent of all infections were due to the Omicron variant.
